The Comfort of God’s Sovereignty

“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:11–12)

Our God is orchestrating all things in this fallen world by his wise and good purposes for his glory. He is not caught off guard by evil, but wisely uses even sin and suffering to accomplish his loving, redemptive plan. Just as Joseph could say to his brothers, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” (Gen. 50:20), so God uses all human events to ultimately display his glory. We can take great refuge in the truth that our lives are not subject to chance or fate, but guided by the sovereign hand of the Lord Most High. Even tragedies, injustices, disasters and griefs are woven into the tapestry God is completing for the good of those who love him. He will right every wrong and turn all our weeping into rejoicing in the world to come. Until then, we can rest in his wise sovereignty.
