“Humble Yourselves” Devotional Day 5: God Exalts the Humble

If we exalt ourselves, we will be humbled. But if we humble ourselves before God and one another, it is God who will exalt us. That is exactly the opposite of what the world says. The world says exalt yourself and you will be exalted. But the truth is that the way up is down. Grace only flows downhill to the meek, the humble, the sinner who confesses.

When we humble ourselves, confessing our sins and weaknesses, we experience God’s grace in fresh ways. We see more clearly how much we need a Savior. Pride melts away as we recognize we have nothing to boast about before God. He receives the humble and contrite.

Humbling ourselves also enables us to build deeper connections with others. As we share our struggles, we no longer pretend to be perfect. This fosters intimacy and empathy. Others can relate better to someone honest about their flaws. And it gives them freedom to take off their own masks.

Questions:

  • How have you experienced God’s grace and exaltation after humbling yourself before him?
  • What keeps you from humbling yourself and confessing your sins before others? Pray and ask God for grace to take that step.
