“Humble Yourselves” Devotional Day 4: Draw Near to God through Prayer and Confession

How does we draw near to God? By humbling ourselves, acknowledging our dependence upon him, and acknowledging our sinful pride that separates us from him. One of the chief ways we draw near to God is through prayer. It does not have to be a long prayer. To pray thoughtfully is to humble ourselves and walk the path of communion with our Lord. To open God’s Word and to read it, inviting him to speak to you through it is to draw near to him. To come to corporate worship with the intention of bringing him the praise and thanksgiving he deserves is to draw near to him. And there is a promise: when we draw near to him, he will draw near to us!

We must not fear being honest about our sin and our sinful desires before God. Our true condition should break our hearts. And it is our firm grasp of the gospel, that Jesus came to save sinners, that will free us to confess the ugliest parts of our hearts.

Questions:

  • What prevents you from drawing near to God in prayer and confession? How can you overcome those obstacles?
  • Take time now to draw near to God in prayer, humbly confessing your sins to him.
