Ephesians 1:11 – “In him we have obtained an inheritance…”
Through our union with Christ, we have the astounding confidence of an eternal inheritance awaiting us. Despite the various struggles we face in this mortal life – illness, grief, poverty, injustice – we can endure them with patience and hope, keeping an eternal perspective. The world as it is now is not our final resting place, but we await the new creation to come, where God himself will dwell with us. Every tear will be wiped away, death and mourning will be no more, and the Spirit’s presence will saturate all creation. This future hope changes our perspective on the painful present. The trials of today are “light and momentary afflictions” that are preparing for us “an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor. 4:17). As we set our sights on the world to come, it lifts our spirits even in the valley of the shadow of death. We walk by faith, not sight, knowing the best is yet to be.
