“So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.” (Psalm 71:18)
What is the value of a living a long life? Why do we desire it and pursue it and spend enormous amounts of time and resources to achieve it? The psalmist provides an answer, but it may not be one we were expecting.
The writer of this psalm pleads with God to maintain his life so that he will be able to proclaim God’s might to just one more generation. It’s a stunning request. He has one thing he wants to pass on to the next generation and the subject is the mightiness of God.
Dads, what is it you hope to pass on to your kids? Granddads and Greatgranddads, what is the one thing you want to be able to pass on to that next generation? It is fun to pass along our love for particular sports teams or hobbies. But may we earnestly desire that God would extend our days until we can tell just one more generation about the greatness, the matchless glory and strength of our God. If we use our last breaths to do that, they will not have been in vain.
