“Taming the Tongue” Sermon Devotional Day 5: Season of Restraint

James says the one who doesn’t stumble in what he says is perfect or mature (James 3:2). Clearly none of us measure up! But we can grow in self-control over our speech. Periodically fasting from words can be clarifying. We may be amazed by how many words we speak that are unnecessary, unhelpful, or unhealthy.

Seeking to use our words sparingly this week, may we speak with care, patience, and grace. May love and truth guide our communication. And when we do stumble with our speech, may we quickly seek the Lord’s forgiveness and help.

Reflection: Is there a particular kind of speech you need to fast from or exercise greater restraint with? Ask the Lord to help you use your words in a way that serves others and honors Him.
